Beginnings: I remember, long ago,
How clear and bright the stars were in those days
When I first knew you and the Enterprise.
I was so young. I had no thought of time,
Thought I could travel through the endless night
Forever to new stars, discovering
New beings and new worlds to walk among.
It seems impossible to be so young.
I had the nerve to try uncovering
Your hidden self, as if I had the right
To break your privacy. It was a crime,
But you forgave me still. There is no praise
Sufficient for your tolerance, I know.
How far away it seems, how long ago.
I learned so much from you, right from the start:
Learning to know myself, know my command,
To know you, too, and then to call you friend,
To read the language of your silences.
I did not know how soon that time would end,
That I could reach out and not find your hand,
That we would turn to new alliances.
I did not think that we would ever part.
Five years went by like months, and at their close
I thought, unthinking, we would journey on,
Continuing along the starry road.
I learned how wrong I was when you were gone.
I thought I knew it all. I never knew
How ignorant I was till I lost you.
