golden goblet to be refilled. "Kirk is hardly Loukas's lover. He's
staying in Loukas's house, not in his bed."
"Fifteen years is a long time. Loukas deserves to be happy."
"I agree. But he deserves better than Kirk. Kirk's nothing more
than a trouble-making fool--and he must be discredited immediately before
he does any more harm. If Loukas won't do it, I wi 11."
"How can you discredit Kirk? He doesn't even visit the taverns."
"Every man has his price," Roldin replied slowly. "I'll find his."
His dinner forgotten, Spock sat looking at the blank monitor screen,
his long fingers steepled thoughtfully against his lips.
Kirk shut the door of his bedroom securely behind him and stepped
out into his private walled garden. After scanning the small space quickly
to make certain he was alone, he pressed the green stone in the wide golden
armband he always wore.
"Spock."
"Yes, Jim." The answer came immediately, and the calm, resonant voice
sent a delicious shiver down Kirk's spine.
